Attention
All COS Coaches,
Skate
Canada - Central Ontario (COS) will be implementing a new
Outreach Program for this upcoming season.
This program, which is scheduled
to start on October 1st, 2008, will focus on club consultation
conducted by representatives of COS.
We are looking for five Club
Consultants to join our Outreach Program.
These individuals must be
trained CanSkate coaches with a minimum of one year experience
in a CanSkate setting.

more information, please click here.

| The
Skating Programs Committee wishes to thank all coaches,
officials and other interested parties who took the time
to give us their thoughts and opinions on the questions
we raised regarding the consideration of optional dance
partnering for STARSkate tests. Feedback received indicates
a clear divergence of opinion therefore no changes will
be made at this time.
We
have made note of some misconceptions and confusion around
the question as well as on current procedures for dance
tests, and therefore have determined that further explanation
and a more scientific approach would be beneficial. To
that end, we will distribute a communication piece to
clarify the misconceptions and explain some of the other
changes that may be considered in future, as well as put
forth a more detailed and tailored survey. These documents
will be available online in mid-summer and we will send
an invitation to all at that time to once again provide
input. We will then compile the results which will assist
the Skating Programs Committee in their deliberations
on future directions for ice dance partnering

To
teach Skate Canada programs coaches must be certified,
they must also be members of Skate Canada and hold a valid
first aid certificate.

Skate
Canada views a coach as being anyone who is a fully
certified NCCP Trained CanSkate Professional Coach or
higher, is a Coaching Member of Skate Canada and holds
a valid First Aid certificate. Skate Canada Professional
Coaches must fulfill these qualifications before being
allowed to coach in a Skate Canada club or sanctioned
skating school. This ensures a standardized approach to
quality instruction in Skate Canada-Central Ontario programs.
The National Coaching Certification
Program (NCCP) is a three-part program that provides education
for coaches. It addresses various aspects of coaching
through Theory, Technical and Practical components. Topics
covered in the Theory component, for example, include
Skill Analysis, Sport Safety, Growth and Development,
while in the Technical component, Music and Choreography,
Basic Movement, and Business Management are a sample of
the topics addressed.
